This Monday
We are hopeful that the latest Covid outbreak will not delay again our long awaited lunch with Sir Stephen Tindall at The Northern Club.  At this stage advice from the Ministry of Health for such events is that they can continue, but if you are coming by public transport to wear a mask.  Please contact Jacqui if you have any questions or special personal circumstances that need attention.  We have around 100 registered for this lunch so we are expecting a good event.  We will also be inducting two new members, Debbie Klintworth and  Kitrina Jeffs.
Earlier This Week
Being the second Monday of the month, we had an out of town Zoom speaker.  Wendy Patrick, a Rotarian  from San Diego spoke on  “The Bonding Power of Social Distancing” .  Wendy gave a well-researched New Zealand focussed presentation, which was thought provoking.  Wendy even referenced a University of Otago study, showing the levels of mental distress resulting from the Covid as affecting young people (18-24) much more than older people (over 65).  She added a new perspective to the Covid situation which she is researching and I have received quite a few favourable comments from members about the presentation.

The Week After – 23rd November
This will be a Zoom event with 5 minute talks from two of our members.
Social Event on 30th November
Based on a survey at the last meeting, there was a clear preference for a dinner at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron as America’s Cup fever heats up.  This event is now open for bookings, which can be done through ClubRunner (an email invitation was sent to everyone earlier this week) or by contacting Jacqui in the office.
Final Meeting of the year – 7th December
We have Shamabell Equaab booked in for this date and will confirm venue details next week.
Next Year
The year starts with public holidays on 1st and 8th February.  So we are looking to open with a big meeting on February 15.  Then we will try for the Hotel Britomart as a potential venue on 1st March, when our speaker will be the architect of that hotel, Nat Cheshire.
Rotary Club of Newmarket
This Sunday I will be representing our Club at the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Rotary Club of Newmarket, at Auckland Grammar School.  Newmarket was chartered by the Auckland Club.  I will be speaking briefly on our 100 year celebrations.

ERKs – Additional Equipment Needed
The Rotary Club of Ellerslie Sunrise, who is currently overseeing the packing of the next batch of 1000 Emergency Response Kits (ERKs) is seeking some additional equipment as follows, between now and the end of October:
  1. A roller conveyor belt. To run the ERKs boxes along during packing. Ideally with rollers about 200 – 300mm above floor level. Width – minimum of about 250mm. Length - we’d take whatever we could get but 20m or 30m of it would be just great.
  2. Another pallet jack (or two). We have one already but a couple more would help things run more smoothly – for both the ERK box packing and the shipping container loading.
Delivery to our packing warehouse in East Tamaki would be fantastic otherwise they are sure they could magic up a trailer and come and collect the item/s.  If you are able to help, then please contact David Broadhead on 021 324 762.
Emergency Response Kits are a ‘first response’ resource distributed to affected families in the South Pacific, immediately following a disaster to support them through the first days.  A family can construct basic shelter, keep themselves protected from the elements and utilise the immediate survival items that are included.  The value of a kit including container, contents, freight and storage is approximately NZ$600. The project has been encouraged by the NZ Government, who often provides transportation, logistical and financial support.  ERKs are prepositioned in Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands, to enable prompt distribution throughout Polynesia and Melanesia, with back up supplies retained in Auckland, where the kits are packed by Rotarians and supporters.
Zone 8 Conference – 19 to 20 Sept 2020
Please join us and be part of the Virtually Alice Springs Rotary Zone 8 Conference, which will be held on Saturday 19 September from 11.30am to 1.00pm and Sunday 20 September from 11.30am to 1.00pm.  The list of inspirational speakers and the link to register can be found by going to:
Event with speaker Sir Don McKinnon
The Rotary Club of Newmarket invites you to hear Sir Don McKinnon on Tuesday 29 September from 6.30pm at the Remuera Golf Club.  The title of Sir Don’s speech is “How can NZ achieve good diplomatic and trading relationships with China while staying onside with its traditional Western allies?”  Sir Don served as the Commonwealth Secretary-General and is a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.  During his tenure as New Zealand’s longest serving Foreign Minister, Sir Don was the inspiration behind what now has become The Asia Society from the Asia 2000 Group, and the Centre for Strategic Studies.  Sir Don is now the chair of the NZ China Council.  Tickets are $40.00pp, which includes a buffet dinner and payment can be made to the Rotary Newmarket’s bank account 12-3252-0025507-00, including your surname as reference.  Also please register your attendance with the President of the Rotary Club of Newmarket Scott Burridge
