Happy Holiday Season, Merry Xmas everyone, at last it feels like summer is upon us.
Thanks to everyone who attended the Xmas Party Bowls night on Monday at Auckland Bowling Club.  Despite the rain outside we enjoyed playing on their indoor carpet and the competition was fierce (modesty prevents me from communicating the final result). It was fun all round and a big thanks to the organising team for all their work, and for the delicious Xmas kai, the pavlova was sensational!
On a sadder note we record the passing of our good friend and member Barry Graham after a tough battle with cancer.  One of life’s real gentlemen, Barry will be greatly missed and thanks to the Club members who have offered his widow Margaret their support.
We held our final Board Meeting  last night and reviewed the engagement survey results.  The findings are very helpful, so thanks to those members who responded. We have decided to undertake a brief follow-up survey in the next few weeks which will address some very specific questions that will guide our direction for next year.
We have also made some good progress on the Mana Tangata history project and have a clear sense of direction.
Please make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to provide some gifts or Xmas puddings for the Auckland City Mission, we will still be collecting these at our final lunch for the year on Monday.
Stewart Germann will be deputising for me on Monday after a superb performance at the Christmas Bowls. I am off on a long planned two day adventure with my wife Robyne.
If I don’t see you before Christmas please have a wonderful holiday season full of family, friends, joy and laughter. The odd nice present helps too.
And let us reflect on the good work done by Rotary throughout 2018 and the challenges ahead as we seek to make a difference through service in our local communities and globally.”
Hei kona mai,
Brett O'Riley
Next Monday is a Horse Racing Panel
Next Monday 19 November, we will have a Horse Racing Panel with Alan Fu, the Managing Director of the New Zealand Chinese Jockey Club and Paul Wilcox, the Chief Executive Officer with the Auckland Racing Club.  President Brett will facilitate this Panel, which will talk about each speaker’s future plans regarding racing, as well what is happening at the Ellerslie Racecourse and what is happening in general regarding horse racing.
End of Year Bowls & BBQ – 3 December
We will be holding our end of year function on Monday 3 December, when we will again have a bowls and bbq evening but this time at the Auckland Bowling Club (across from the Stanley Street Tennis Centre) – there will be no lunch meeting at the Stamford on that day.  The cost will be $40pp for bowls and bbq or $25pp for bbq only.  The evening will begin at 5pm for those who are bowling to allow them to register and meet their team mates, with play starting at 5.30pm and dinner scheduled for around 7pm.  If you are unable to put together a team of four players and would like to play, don't worry as we can organise this for you.  We will also be collecting Christmas presents and selling Christmas puddings, which will be given this year to the Auckland City Mission to distribute to families in need.  If you would like to be part of this fun evening (partners and family members are most welcome to join us), then please let Jacqui in the office know.
Rotary Christmas Puddings
It is that time of year again to think about getting organised for Christmas and what better way to start, than by ordering some Rotary Christmas Puddings, whether for yourself or to donate to a worthy cause, or to do both - this year will be donating puddings to the Auckland City Mission.  Puddings are now packaged in a heat-proof bowl (though I still have some in tins if anyone prefers).  These puddings are still $20 each, with $5 being donated to our Club, so please contact Jacqui in the office if you would like to place an order – they can be purchased in any quantity (and come in cartons of six).
What is a Woman’s Place in 2018 NZ?
Only 125 years ago, New Zealand became the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote. This concert, developed in association with The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Auckland Museum, will be an exciting mix of classical and contemporary music, inspiring multimedia imagery and the spoken word -  A Woman’s Place  7.30PM, Thursday 29 November, Auckland Town Hall.   Guests include Dame Rosanne Meo, Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh, Georgina Beyer, Dr Sioxsie Wiles, Helen Clark (video content) and TBC Lizzie Marvelly.
Governmental Use of Data Seminar
IPANZ New Professionals invite you to their seminar ‘The Current and Future use of Data in Government’ on Thursday 29 November, from 5.15 to 7.15pm, at the Victoria of University’s Auckland Facility, 50 Kitchener Street.  This is an opportunity to discuss the risks and opportunities around the use of data in Government policy and administration.  The speakers, Tim Maloney and Paul Stone, will share their experience and views on how data can be used to support stronger policy outcomes, the potential risks, and key opportunities of broadening the use of data in government policy and administration.  Find out more and register

2019 RI Convention – Hamburg, Germany
The Rotary International's 2019 Convention will be held in Hamburg, Germany from 1 to 5 June.  There are already nearly 30 people from different NZ Clubs attending, including RCA President Brett O’Riley and myself.  If you’d like to know more about this event and are possibly interested in joining us, would like to fly with and/or stay with other NZ Rotarians in Hamburg, let me know or reach out directly to the District Coordinator for this Convention: Jennie Herring:  Or if you would like to register, then please go here.  If you register prior to Dec. 15, 2018, you will receive an early-registration discount, which is US$395 vs. US$495 or US$595 at later dates.  District Governor Ingrid Waugh, also mentioned the possibility of a 10-day “Zurich-to-Amsterdam Cruise” leading up to the convention  and Jennie Herring can help us get the black shirts that all the NZers wear - which will really make us stand out!  So please let us know if you are interested in attending, so we can organise a couple of fun Kiwi/RCA activities, while in Hamburg!  And also feel free to run any questions by us
